Thursday 9th October saw the introduction of new student members to the Actuarial Profession in an event jointly sponsored by the Faculty of Actuaries and the Faculty of Actuaries Students’ Society. Over 40 students from companies in and around Edinburgh attended the half day event which provided an opportunity for new members to meet with key figures in the Profession and hear first hand experiences from senior students, actuaries and examiners.
The event kicked off with a brief history of the Faculty of Actuaries and a talk on regulation by Robbie McGregor, Designated Professional Body Manager. The talk highlighted the aims of regulation and some of the professional and personal regulation actuaries are subject to.
Trevor Watkins, Head of Education and CPD, then gave an overview of the widely thought arduous route to qualifying as an actuary. This was followed by a presentation by Georgina Warren on the aims and requirements of the work-based skills component for qualification.
Finally, Helen Gregson led students through a marking exercise where they got the chance to be examiners and mark a sample student paper. This highlighted some of the pitfalls to avoid as they start to sit Professional exams.
The event closed off in Le Monde on George Street with a well deserved glass of wine!
