J M Souness Memorial Trophy

The J M Souness Memorial Trophy was donated to the Faculty of Actuaries Students’ Society by the wife of James Souness, after whom the trophy is named, following his untimely and tragic death in September 1990.

James Souness, born in Edinburgh in 1928, had a long list of achievements over his lifetime.  He served the Faculty in many ways.  He was an examiner and had two lengthy spells on Council, the first of which saw him take up the position of Honorary Publicity Officer.  His second spell took him through several senior positions to his election as President in June 1989.

Outside of school and work, he was a keen player of many sports, including rugby, football, cricket and golf.  He was a member of the Heart Of Midlothian Football Club team who won the 1955 Scottish League Cup – so it seems very fitting that the trophy be awarded to the winning team at the FASS Football Tournament every year.
