Current Topics 2009
Current Topics provides qualified actuaries and actuarial students in Scotland with a summary of the major issues affecting the profession in the last year. The talk will be split into four different sub-categories: Investments; Pensions; Life Assurance; General Insurance.

This year the speakers are:

Investments:
Euan Munro – Standard Life Investments

Euan heads Multi-asset Investing and Global Fixed Interest for Standard Life Investments. The Multi-Asset Investing team set and implement asset allocation policy for a wide variety of clients, with a growing book of absolute return and LDI business. The team contains over 20 investment professionals and manages in excess of £60bn. The Fixed Interest team, also containing 20 investment professionals, manages over £49bn split between European credit market and global interest rates. Euan is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries and has 16 years of experience in financial markets.

Pensions:
John Lawson – Standard Life

John is Head of Pensions Policy at Standard Life. He re-joined Standard Life in 2001 after eight years with Bank of Scotland and nine previous years with Standard Life. His current role includes dealing with UK, European and Asian governments on policy issues, both on behalf of Standard Life and as a representative of the UK insurance industry. He has wide experience of the pensions industry, having worked in administration, regulatory compliance, sales, product development and strategy roles.
John is a frequent commentator on pension issues in the UK trade and national press and writes widely under his own name in a number of UK trade publications. John is Chair of the Tax Incentivised Savings Association’s Retirement Council, a member of the Department for Work and Pensions’ Better Regulation Stakeholder group, and a member of the Association of British Insurers’ Pensions and Savings Strategy Committee. He is a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society and an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Life Assurance:
Sanjay Joshi – Standard Life

Sanjay qualified as a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries in 2007. In his varied multinational career in the industry over the last 5 years he has worked on numerous new product launches in Ireland and the launch of a new operation in France. Alongside his current role in Business Planning for Standard Life he is also a trustee for two separate charities.

General Insurance:
Andrew Hancock – Ernst & Young (General Insurance)

Andrew has over 8 years experience in general insurance and qualified as a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 2005. He has extensive knowledge of capital modelling and recently developed and implemented capital models for a large Lloyd's syndicate. He was also involved in the development of one of the first ever capital models for a large global company. Andrew's experience also covers reserving projects including year end reviews and Lloyd's opinions. He is currently involved with Solvency 2 based projects, in particular QIS4 implementation.

Debbie Symonds – Ernst & Young (General Insurance)
Debbie qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in July 2008 and has over 4 years general insurance experience working with Ernst & Young. Debbie has broad experience of reserving in the London Market, including carrying out Lloyd's Actuarial Opinions. She has also worked on numerous Retail reserving projects and has also been involved in a variety of audit assignments including experience, pricing and reserve reviews.
